Định nghĩa

Câu điều kiện loại 2 được sử dụng để diễn tả một hành động, sự việc không thể xảy ra trong hiện tại hoặc tương lai dựa vào một điều kiện không có thật ở hiện tại.

Câu điều kiện loại 2 thường bao gồm 2 mệnh đề: Mệnh đề điều kiện (mệnh đề if) và Mệnh đề kết quả (mệnh đề chính), và 2 mệnh đề này có thể hoán đổi vị trí trong câu.

Công thức

Mệnh đề if

Mệnh đề chính

If + S + V (quá khứ đơn)

S + would/ could + V-inf

Lưu ý:

– Động từ “to be” trong mệnh đề if luôn được chia là were cho tất cả các ngôi.

– Ở mệnh đề chính, would/wouldn’t được dùng để biểu thị giả định chung chung một kết quả trái ngược với hiện tại, còn could/ couldn’t được dùng để nhấn mạnh giả định về khả năng (có thể hay không thể làm gì) trái ngược với hiện tại.

– Ngoài would và could, chúng ta cũng có thể sử dụng các trợ động từ khác như might, should, had to, ought to trong mệnh đề chính của câu điều kiện loại 2.

Ví dụ: Pete could buy this laptop if he had more money. (Pete có thể mua chiếc laptop này nếu anh ấy có nhiều tiền hơn.)

If I were you, I wouldn’t worry too much about it. (Nếu tôi là bạn, tôi sẽ không quá lo lắng về điều đó.)

Dùng để diễn tả một hành động, sự việc có thể xảy ra trong tương lai

If I were rich, I would buy that car. (Nếu tôi giàu có, tôi sẽ mua chiếc xe đó.)

Dùng để khuyên bảo, đề nghị hoặc yêu cầu

I wouldn’t buy it if I were you. (Tôi sẽ không mua nó nếu tôi là bạn.)

Đảo ngữ câu điều kiện loại 2

If + S + V (quá khứ đơn), S + would/ could + V-inf

→ Were + S + N/ Adj/ to V, S + would/ could + V-inf

Ví dụ: If I were you, I wouldn’t drink that smoothie. (Nếu tôi là bạn, tôi sẽ không uống ly sinh tố đó đâu.)

→ Were I you, I wouldn’t drink that smoothie.

If this purse weren’t so expensive, I would buy it. (Nếu chiếc ví này không quá đắt, tôi sẽ mua nó.)

→ Weren’t this purse so expensive, I would buy it.

If you took that music class, you could play the piano. (Nếu bạn tham gia lớp học nhạc đó, bạn có thể chơi piano.)

→ Were you to take that music class, you could play the piano.

Biến thể của câu điều kiện loại 2

Biến thể mệnh đề if

If + S + were + V-ing, S + would/ could + V-inf

Ví dụ: If I were listening to music, I wouldn’t hear what you said. (Nếu tôi đang nghe nhạc, tôi sẽ không nghe thấy những gì bạn nói.)

If + S + had + PII, S + would/ could + V-inf

Ví dụ: If I had had a map, I wouldn’t get lost. (Nếu tôi có một bản đồ, tôi sẽ không bị lạc.)

Biến thể mệnh đề chính

If + S + V (quá khứ đơn), S + would/ could + be + V-ing

Ví dụ: If it were Monday, I would be working at the company. (Nếu hôm nay là thứ Hai, tôi sẽ đang làm việc ở công ty.)

If + S + V (quá khứ đơn), S + V (quá khứ đơn)

Ví dụ: If I finished my work yesterday, I was free today. (Nếu hôm qua tôi đã hoàn thành công việc của mình, hôm nay tôi đã rảnh rỗi.)
